Weather: Cloudy and at 6 pm tonight it is raining steadily. Otherwise a good day for moving about.
Silves
This morning we decided to drive up to the Barragem north of Silves to check out the dam and reservoir. After that we planned to do a walk and stop at Valdemar's for a chicken lunch.
FYI: Silves is a good-sized town that dates to the time of the Moors who ruled the Iberian pennisula from 700AD to roughly 1200AD when the Christians took it back. Of course there is a whole history before the Moors going back to the Romans. Picture a town located behind the first range of mountains (worn down) that is located on the floor of a river valley. However, much of the town including a castle that dates back to the time of the Moors is at an elevation much higher than the river. Imagine the Arade river that flows out of the mountains past Silves and out to the ocean ten miles away and is tidal all the way up past Silves where you can find tidal flats that one would expect to find near the ocean.
Change of plan: Walk Silves first, have lunch and do the reservoir. However, as I have explained in the past I am punching my way to 83 and both of us don't do hills very well.
But! We decided to make the climb to the castle that we haven't done in 10 years. I don't know the exact elevation but Silves is everything a hill town should be.

As may have guessed we never did get up to the reservoir. Another day!
