Friday cont'd:
For happy hour at the bar/meeting place at Monte Santo we met our friends Jim and Denise who have just come back from an excursion to the Evora area.
The principle reason for the trip was to see the ancient stones near Vila Vacosa. Mary and I have visited Evora for a few days and then had a glimpse of the marble industry near there but we had no idea about the ancient stones and the history of the area.
However, Jim and Denise didn't really get to Evora. They stayed overnight in Vila Vacosa and saw the Neolithic stones; the Duke of Braganca's Palace and a terrific tour of the site where marble is mined.
Jim got some fantastic pictures that no ordinary tourist would ever get to see. They just happened across the best tour guide.
I learned a lot just looking at his pictures. Can you imagine mining marble 1500' down. It is not difficult to understand why they were pretty excited about their trip.
