Smugglers Cove Journal 13

We are sticking close to home for moment and after discovering that the Marinha Beach parking lot was ridiculously overcrowded I thought we should try Smuggler's Cove.  Only a small portion of people know about Smuggler's Cove.  There are two ways in if you know hows.  One is down the cliff on a very long set of stairs and the other is winding your car through a village that takes nerve and frankly some skill.  The street is one way only and you can only pass at the turns.  I'll do a Google Earth soon.

So we made it through the village and across the dirt road to the top of the cove.  From there you have walk down a horribly rough and eroded path.  Once you are at the bottom of the path you meet with the stairs from the other side.  Then you must risk limb by climbing down a horrible set of roughed out steps to the tunnel that takes you to the beach.  Here is a video of the scene and some photos of the tunnel entrance.  To play the video hit the arrow once.  The screen will change to a second arrow and you will see a square in the lower right corner  of that screen.  Hit the square to enlarge the video to full screen size.

In order to get to the beach you MUST go through the tunnel.  The tunnel is about 90 feet long and is very slippery from dripping water.  I would have gone through the tunnel with my camera but frankly this old guy is slowly getting smarter than that.  I last did it in 2020 with Meg Walden and that was a good memory.  So be it!

Beautiful spot to spend some beach time, although getting there was no picnic from the sounds of it. Smugglers Cove is almost identical to a tiny beach the girls and I used to visit when we stayed on St. Jean Cap Ferrat in the south of France all those years ago. Sarah’s mind was blown because she saw her first TOPLESS Grandma (not me) basking in the sun there. Those were the days my friend.
