Praying Hands Bridge Journal 54

Whenever we travel west of us on the secondary highway N125 (as opposed to the tollway) we cross this bridge.  Long ago I renamed it the 'Praying Hands' bridge and you can easily see why.  My friend Mike Earle has taken numerous pictures of this bridge from several vantage points as he always seemed to be so impressed by it.  Today I drove in to the little village that sits on the river and took some shots.

This is similar to the new Gordie Howe bridge being built over the Detroit River at home.  It is called a cable-stayed bridge.  This one is remarkably long because not only does it cross the Arade River but it has to cross the width of the mud flats created by the tide and that easily exceeds a mile.  The tide was only about half-way in when I took the picture.

There are a lot of these bridges in Europe so it's nothing unique here but North America has finally joined the cable-stay club.

It's a real thrill just to drive over it because the towers always impress ever time you drive under.
