Porches Journal 40

Wed. Mar. 6

After we spent time in the pool we had lunch and decided to go over to Porches.

Porches is a small town right on the N125 and we pass through it often.  As is typical in the Algarve the town is hilly and the streets very narrow.

Every year we allow ourselves a few evenings out at very special restaurants.  Last year we did Oregano and Barradis; both country restaurants with excellent reputations.  They didn't disappoint.  I wrote them up in the 2023 journal.

Our goal was to find the two high end restaurants that we are aware of in Porches.  One is Porches Velho and the other is O Leao de Porches which has 1 Michelin star.

These two restaurants are hidden in the middle of a rather poor residential area and we have never had any luck finding them by just perusing by car.  Today we decided to walk the town and find them.  As it turned out they are quite close to each other but meld right into the town's residential architecture each having a single door.  I believe I could walk on the other side of the street and miss them.  They are both pricey with Leao starting at $90.00 each and Velho not too far behind.  We're not opposed to spending the money but we have to decide if the menu suits us.  We'll decide tomorrow.

You should always try to eat where the locals do as that’s where you get the real McCoy. One of our favourite restaurants in Florence was actually near all the action, and in a neighborhood of locals. It was a small establishment and the owner was the chef. FABULOUS food. Held maybe 25 guests tops. However, if you were a local you took priority over the tourists. If you didn’t get in during the dinner hour you didn’t eat, as he closed about 7 pm. Absolutely the best pork chop I’ve ever eaten was in that little restaurant. LS
