Monte de Canelas Journal 61

Weather:  Pleasant, cloudy and 70F

This morning we decided to drive up past Silves to the barragem or dam that supplies the water for this area.  Our secondary goal was groceries.

As it turned out I decided to postpone the barragem and follow a thought that I had earlier in the week.  Over the years we have driven back into the mountains but I had not made a point of driving up into the local valleys.

So we took the N125 past Alvor and turned north at the first road north.  Most of these roads lead back to Portuguese villages, orange groves, etc.  This was no different.  On the way we had to go through a one-way tunnel (under the railway tracks) and then we drove about 6 km up to Monte de Rocha which is just a small village.  On the way we passed two rather odd entries to someplace.  On the way back we entered one of them and discovered we were in a British enclave.  Then we did the other one which was much much larger where an entry map declared Monte de Canelas with all of the streets and lots indicated.  For all my years travelling around the Algarve I had not seen anything like this except near the ocean where there are a few awful Brit subdivisions.

Monte de Canelas is more upscale and quite nice with some exceptions.  All we saw were old Brits who undoubtedly live here all year long.  Real expats.  Didn't take any pictures except the entry map.

We'll do the dam tomorrow.
