Sophie starts school

My grandniece Sophie started school this year.  I asked her mother Rebecca (my sister's daughter) to send me some remarks about this all important event in Sophie's life.

I have posted Rebecca's BLOG link at the bottom of the article.
Hi!

Sorry this took me a few days to get back to you. It has been pretty busy around here with Halloween and now with Sophie sick. I ended up taking her to emerge today because she has had a rough weekend and it turns out she has pneumonia and a double ear infection to go along with her cold. Hopefully the meds will kick in soon and she can be back to her happy self. Luckily Sophie always has a nurse with her at school so we know she is well taken care of. She will be home tomorrow but hopefully will be well soon.

School has been a wonderful experience so far for Sophie. She is loving every minute as far as we can tell. She loves her teacher and watches her every move! We are starting to get into her real programming at school and she is using some computer programs with 2 switches (one under her tray and one in her headrest) along with some low tech learning. She is using an alphabet flip chart to start “scribbling” letters (the adult writes what for her what letter she chooses) as well as symbols to start to facilitate real communication. Her classmates are also learning the symbols and interact with her using them as well. They have all learned about her symbols and Sophie also uses a Step by Step switch to have conversations with her friends.

The kids in her class are awesome. Everything we had hoped for as far as peer interaction has come true. The kids were curious about Sophie and all her equipment for about the first 5 days and they would all watch carefully if she made a noise or moved quickly etc.. After the first week they didn’t care about it all. They have moved onto helping Sophie when they feel they can, and some are actually very protective of her now. She has made many, many friends in the class and it is wonderful. She was invited by three girls in her class to go trick-or-treating with (so of course we did!). She had a field trip to Fanshawe C.A. on Friday and two children rode the accessible bus with her. They loved it! Apparently other children asked to ride with Sophie for the next trip.

While Sophie was not aware of it we had a difficult first month, but Sophie now has a supply EA and our hope is that she will stay with Sophie until the end of the year but we don’t know if that is possible.

Love Rebecca
