Goderich Evening

We were in Goderich yesterday and took a few photos.  We are approaching the winter solstice and a Lake Huron sunset at this time of year is distinctly different from the sunset at the beginning of summer.  Sundown is so much further south on the lake at this time of the year.  Goderich is still quite errie with so much tornado damage, although new homes are rising among others still covered with canvas.  The salt mine remains heavily damaged but I believe they have incorporated the tornado reclamation into a much larger project that is scheduled to start in 2012.  Salt is being shipped out, but other harbour activities are quite limited.

Looking southwest from Goderich beach about twenty minutes after the sun disappeared.
Michigan is about sixty-five kilometres away--a nice day's sail in good weather.

We drove around to our trailer and I took another shot.  Very different when you know that the sun normally sets on the north side of the river.

Overlooking the Maitland River exiting into Lake Huron behind our trailer
I remember being in Goderich with Mike on November 4, 1995.  The harbour was frozen with about 8" of ice and the tugs were breaking it up preparing for a salt freighter.  There is no ice this year and no sign of any.  The lake is still quite warm and with cold temperatures just beginning, ice will not likely form until the end of December.
