Tavira
In past years we did long trips here regularly. In 2020 we went 300 miles north to the Douro River just before Covid hit and forced us home after 7 days at Quinta de Pacheca. But this trip we haven't gone far at all. So today we decided to get back to Tavira, a place we have been to several times before. It's about 90 km from here so we decided to take the A22 freeway all the way. Even then it took about an hour.
We found a parking spot along the Gilao River and spent about two hours walking around and having lunch. Tavira was levelled in the 1756 earthquake that flattened Lisbon and many other places. As a result the buildings date from the early 1800's and there are some beautiful building in the city. Unfortunately much of the old town has unoccupied buildings but the area as a whole is beautiful and much money is being spent to restore and reuse the buildings along the river.
We finally decided to have lunch and found a nice little place up an old lane. I don't know if it's the proximity to Spain or not but paela was on the menu so we had two chicken paelas. Check out the picture and see the huge lemon slice. It must be there for some reason! I squeezed it and sprinkled it over the rice and the rice came to life.

| It's a quickie Paela but quite good |
After walking around for another while we headed back over the Roman bridge. It's a gorgeous and well built bridge but may be more Moorish than Roman??? While walking across the bridge there was a violinist busker playing so Mary dropped some coins. Mary hates having her picture taken but I didn't have much trouble convincing her to pose with the good looking and young Brazilian. We had good chat with him and headed for the car.

| Typical lane in any old Portuguese town; often a bit ramshackle |
