Ever since we built the house we have used oil to heat our house as nothing else was available except electricity. Later on propane was available, but we didn't see any cost advantage. In May of this year Union Gas proposed coming down the road (which is a deadend), but the cost of doing the road line alone could run to as much as $6,000 per household if we could get all 10 homes to participate. On top of that we received an estimate of $4,000 to run the line from the road to the house (600') and then the furnace would be another $4,000.
As it turned out nine homes participated which was surprising when you consider that some are newer million dollar homes using state-of-the-art geothermal systems. It seems that they are very expensive to maintain. The line down the road turned out to be somewhat cheaper so our overall cost is coming in at around $14,000. We made the decision to change because oil is becoming very expensive and given the fact that we will probably sell within the next ten years natural gas is a more economical and attractive option for buyers. We figure an actual payback of 6 to 7 years. The line has now been laid on the road and we will connect and install a new gas furnace next year when we have used up our current supply of oil.
